Cargo Control Products for Flatbed Trailer

Transporting loads on flatbed trailers demands high standards of safety and reliability. Unlike enclosed trailers, flatbeds expose cargo to open-road conditions such as wind, rain, and shifting during transport. This makes proper cargo control equipment absolutely essential. Whether you’re hauling steel coils, lumber, heavy machinery, or construction materials, the right cargo control products ensure that your load stays secure from start to finish.

1. Tie Down Straps and Ratchet Straps

Tie down straps, are among the most commonly used tools for securing cargo on flatbeds. Made from high-strength polyester webbing, these straps provide excellent tension, durability, and resistance to abrasion and UV damage.

Ratchet Straps: Feature a ratcheting mechanism for precise tension control, ideal for heavy-duty loads.

Cam Buckle Straps: Easier to tighten and release, suitable for lighter or more delicate cargo.

End fittings: Ratchet strap with double J hook, ratchet strap with flat hook, ratchet strap with S hook, ratchet strap with chain extension, ratchet strap with D ring. E track strap.

2. Winch Straps and Winches

Winch straps are another key cargo restraint system for flatbed trailers. These polyester straps are used in combination with trailer winches that are mounted along the trailer’s side rails.

Standard Winch Straps: Winch strap with flat hook, winch strap with double j hook, winch strap with delta ring, winch strap with chain. Typically 2-4 inches wide with a working load limit (WLL) 3333lbs to 5400 lbs.

Sliding winch, Weld-On winch, Bolt on winch: Allow adjustable placement along the trailer frame for balanced tensioning.

Winch bar: A winch bar is a metal bar (usually steel) designed to fit into the holes of a winch mounted on the side of a flatbed trailer. By inserting the bar into the winch and turning it, the operator can tighten (tension) or loosen (release) the webbing strap used for load securement.

3. Chains and Binders

For extremely heavy or abrasive loads such as construction equipment or steel materials, transport chains and binders are the preferred solution.

Grade 70 Transport Chains: Zinc-plated or gold-chromate finished for corrosion resistance and identification.

Load Binders: Available as ratchet binders or lever binders to tighten chains and lock loads in place.

4. Corner Protectors and Edge Guards

When using straps or chains, corner protectors help prevent damage to both the cargo and the tie-down equipment.

Plastic Corner Protectors: Lightweight and flexible, suitable for boxes and pallets.

Steel and Rubber Edge Guards: Provide superior protection for sharp or heavy-edged loads like steel sheets or concrete slabs.

Using edge protection extends the lifespan of straps and ensures compliance with cargo securement regulations.

5. Tarps and Tarp Accessories

A flatbed tarp system shields cargo from weather elements and road debris.

Lumber Tarps: Cover tall or stacked materials with flap ends for complete coverage.

Steel Tarps: Designed for lower-profile loads with durable, waterproof fabric.

EPDM Rubber Tarp Straps: Provide front-end protection and quick fastening during transport.

Tarps are available in vinyl, canvas, and polyethylene materials for varying levels of durability and cost efficiency.

7. Load Bars and Cargo Nets

For lighter or palletized cargo, load bars and cargo nets help prevent movement inside enclosed or partial flatbed setups.

Car Bars: Adjustable and lock into place between trailer walls or rails, including similar products: shoring bar, decking beam, cargo lock plank.

Cargo Nets: Provide multidirectional restraint and distribute pressure evenly over cargo.

8. Cab rack

A cab rack is a heavy-duty aluminum structure installed between the truck cab and the flatbed trailer. It serves multiple purposes:

Storage: Provides organized compartments or shelves for storing tie-downs, straps, tarps, and tools.

Protection: Acts as a barrier to prevent cargo from crashing into the cab during sudden stops or accidents.

Convenience: Keeps equipment easily accessible for loading and unloading.

Depending on the model, cab racks can be open-frame, enclosed, or custom-built to meet specific hauling needs.
